Ululation is a distinctive sound of Africa. It is a powerful form of expression, a traditional vocal practice often accompanied by live music and dancing, performed to the excitement, delight and encouragement of participants in celebration.
ULULATION forms an experimental and experiential audio-visual landscape that generates an alternative dialogue between past and present in real and virtual space. It aims to activate the cultural restructuring of urban space. Ululation amplifies the unheard, untold and unseen. It is a public call to attention, action and response. Ululation is inescapable, unmistakable… it cannot be ignored.
ULULATION vol.1 featured video screenings, live music, sound, production, dance and performance art. The all-day audio-visual show included Brown Core Fly Stream by Tabita Rezaire, the IN/FLUX series by SPARCK & Lowave and Povo Crate Digging by Pungwe Nights with special guests Mandla Mlangeni & the Freedom Ensemble, Edith WeUtonga, Sibo, amongst other musicians and artists.
Brown Core Fly Stream
Brown Core Fly Stream is a continuous flow of data aiming to challenge and deconstruct western hegemony on our screens.
Brown Core Fly Stream is about claiming and owning spaces of culture and knowledge and asserting brown narratives and experiences into the realm of relevancy.
Brown Core Fly Stream is an act of radical self-love.
Povo Crate Digging
Povo Crate Digging is a participatory intervention that invites the public to dig into their own record collection whether active or inactive, to extract musical knowledge and rewrite our histories through a dialogue of sound, images and dance.
The public were invited to bring along their vinyls of Zim/Chimurenga music to be part of “the collective listening session!"
SPARCK & Lowave
IN/FLUX is a series of three compilations of experimental films and videos from the African world. The violence and the pleasures, the contradictions, fears and desires of a planet shaped by the postcolonial condition, the present-future of our common humanity in a global, 21st century system shot through with radical change: these are the foci of IN/FLUX.
